Nintendo was founded in Japan 1889. There first product was handcrafted playing card,s called Hanafuda. In the late 1960s, Nintendo started to establish more and more in the toy industry. One of their first products was light guns, used in a game emulating clay pigeon shooting. Their first real hit was an arcade game, called Donkey Kong.
The year before that, their first hand held game in the series Game & Watch, was released. Instead of focusing on the ongoing arcade market, Nintendo set of to entertain in people in their homes. The success of the 60 different Game & Watch products, may be one of the reasons for this bold move. One character that is a big icon, a symbol of Nintendo is Mario He was first named "Jumpman", but was renamed Mario. This was to please the persistent landlord, Nintendo had at that time. 1983 Nintendo released their console called Famicom in Japan. Something known as Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the rest of the world. Against all odds, even after being forced to call back the first 500 000 copies. NES became a great success. Globally this console sold 64 miljon copies and was more or less the start of something new. The renaissance of consoles as home entertainment had begun.
